Replacement Headrest Speakers for your RX-7 Convertible!

Mazda has created many great cars over the years and the RX-7 is certainly one of their best. All RX-7 'verts' from 88-91 1/2 have headrest speakers as a stock item. We're pleased to offer an exact fit premium replacement, The Millennium-R.

Now you can get better than new headrest sound in your RX-7 by dropping in a set of our Millennium-R headrest speakers.

The headrest design in the RX-7 is more complicated than the one-piece Miata headrest, but you can open them up and replace those headrest speakers.

There's a zipper located on the bottom to get you started but getting full access to the HR speaker boxes requires removing the headrest speaker upholstery. Here's a link to a writeup of one technique from the RX7Club.com

But if your RX-7 is anything like our test vehicle (special thanks to John Starck for pictures of his beautifully restored '89 RX-7), you are probably looking at recovering the headrest anyway.

Inside the RX-7 headrests are two boxes of a clamshell design - you'll reuse the boxes. Pull them apart and you'll find the original speakers. Need some help with the install? Check out our YouTube video showing how to remove the old speakers and install the Millennium-R's.

The Millennium-R's are true premium-quality music speakers and have numerous improvements over the factory speakers including:


• Much larger magnets than the original factory speakers and are rated to handle a larger 25 watts RMS, 10 watts continuous  full-frequency power each compared to the oem speaker's 5 watts.
• Polymer impregnated cones. This treatment helps resist moisture - important in a convertible (we've all been caught in the rain a few times!). The added stiffness also improves transient response and performance.
• Butyl rubber surround. Most of the oem RX-7 speakers failed because the accordion paper surround rotted away. With the Millennium-R's, the paper surround has been replaced with a high-compliance butyl rubber surround. This not only makes them moisture resistant, but also greatly increases the low-end frequency response due to a large X-max. The Millennium-R's have a warm, neutral characteristic that can be listened to for hours without fatigue.
• Free Crossover / Blocking Capacitors. Each speaker includes a 150uf crossover/blocking capacitor to maximize performance and help protect the speakers from damage. A $20 value - free!
• The frequency response is an impressive
  100 - 14,000 Hz -3dB.
• The impedance is 8 ohms which means these will work safely in your RX-7 with the stock head unit and amps or any aftermarket model. You can also safely re-wire your headrest speakers (if desired) in either a serial or parallel configuration.
• No cutting up your seat foam or modifying any wiring. Exact oem fit and they simply plug in. Note that you will re-use your existing headrest speaker boxes.

After a week, and a good weekend drive, I've come to the conclusion your speakers are far superior to the stock. I literally could FEEL the difference in bass! As you can see from the pictures, I put your speakers in the headrest and electrical taped them together, while leaving the passenger side still stock. I then drove to Rockingham to see the filming of the show "PINKS". I put them to the test the whole way there and even with the top down, they gave the sensation of actually wearing a pair of headhugging-old fashioned-headphones! John S., N.C.
